Safety Videos

FAQs

Is there a minimum age requirement to volunteer?

Yes. For all construction projects, volunteers must be at least 18 years old. 16- and 17-year-old volunteers are not allowed to be on high ladders or use power tools.

For the ReStore, volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Do I need to have construction experience?

No, all of our projects are built primarily with inexperienced volunteers who have a willingness to learn. Our construction supervisors will teach you what you need to know.

What should I wear?

Dress with safety in mind and remember that construction sites and warehouses can be dirty or dusty! Clothes should fit comfortably, but should not be baggy (long sleeves should be buttoned) and should not have obscene or controversial messages or be overly tight or revealing. Shorts should be no less than mid-thigh length. We recommend athletic shoes, work shoes or work boots. ABSOLUTELY NO OPEN TOE, OPEN HEEL OR HIGH HEEL SHOES. Jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, rings, dangling earrings, etc.) should not be worn.

What about cancelations for inclement weather?

Plan to volunteer rain or shine. We rarely cancel build days, however, if extreme weather is forecasted, we may decide to reschedule the workday. Habitat will make a decision as soon as possible either on the day prior or at least 2 hours prior build day and update all volunteers via email or phone.

What kind of work will I be doing on a build site?

We incorporate volunteers into just about every aspect of the build, from framing and installing siding, to indoor painting and finishing – so it’s best to register with a big heart and open mind.

Whatever job you’re assigned, make sure you’re comfortable with it. If you are unable to complete a task or feel uneasy (not everyone wants to be on a ladder), tell your crew leader–we’re happy to find a job that better suits you!

What should I bring/ Is lunch provided?

We provide all necessary tools and protective gear including, hard hat and safety glasses. We also have gloves available but please keep in mind that they are not cold weather gloves.

Crystal Coast Habitat will provide lunches to all volunteers who have signed up. You are responsible for providing enough water for the entire day and any additional snacks, if desired.
